Founded in 1989, the National Black Theatre Festival has as its goal to unite Black theatre companies in America and ensure the survival of the genre into the next millennium. The founder, the late Larry Leon Hamlin with the support of the late Dr Maya Angelou, who served as the festival’s first chairperson attracted performances by some of America’s best professional and highly acclaimed performers.
