Congratulations to Dr. Angela L. Harris, Class of 1993! Dr. Harris was hired as a Senior Staff Psychologist at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in August 2013 after completing her APA accredited internship at the University of South Carolina Counseling and Human Development Center in Columbia, South Carolina

Professionally, she is involved in the American Psychological Association, Association of Black Psychologists, Ohio Psychological Association, and American Group Psychological Association. Dr. Harris graduated with a doctorate degree in clinical psychology, July 2013 from Wright State University’s School of Professional Psychology in Dayton, Ohio. Her research examined the barriers to group psychotherapy for African-American college students. Furthermore her research had a focus on black racial identity development and coping skills used by African-American college students.

In her current position at Ohio University, Dr. Angela Harris’ duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: individual and group psychotherapy for OU’s undergraduate/graduate student population, crisis management, consultation, outreach, on-call response, and supervision of mental health graduate trainees.

In her therapeutic work with students, she utilizes a collaborative and brief model approach to psychotherapy. Her therapeutic style and orientation is primarily interpersonal-process and often includes afrocentric, multicultural, spiritual, solution-focused, stages of change, and cognitive-behavioral strategies and techniques. Her clinical areas of interests include: group psychotherapy, group assessment, interpersonal/relationship issues, identity issues (which a focus on black and biracial identity development), adjustment/life transition issues, grief/loss, depression/anxiety, and personality disorders in minority populations. In the upcoming year, Dr. Harris plans to become an adjunct faculty member teaching Introduction to Psychology and/or Group Psychotherapy.

Currently, Dr. Harris, along with her line sisters from Fall ’91, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Iota Chapter, are raising funds to make a future donation to the Cheyney University Alumni Scholarship Fund.
