As you know, it is important to hire the best talented faculty and staff possible to support the teaching and learning environments at Cheyney University. We have recently seen much more interest in our employment notices—for whatever reason. We look forward to working with these new hires and the other dedicated faculty and staff to continue our Pathway to Excellence.
Here are our new hires that are expected to help us support the teaching and learning environments.
Dr. Hazel Spears (Fall 2012)
Tenure-Track Faculty in Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences
Dr. Hazel Spears has served Cheyney University of Pennsylvania as an adjunct faculty member since Fall 2005. Effective this fall, Dr. Spears will serve as a full-time, tenure track faculty in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Spears completed her Ph.D. in Psychology from Princeton University and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Psychology from the University of Southern California. She will be a welcomed and needed faculty member in Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Dr. Ivan Turnipseed (Fall 2012)
Tenure-Track Faculty /Coordinator of HRTM
Dr. Turnipseed will assume the role of tenure-track faculty member and Coordinator in the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management program this Fall. His most recent faculty appointments were at Stockton College in New Jersey and Central Connecticut State University. Dr. Turnipseed earned his BA from Brandeis University, his Masters in Tourism & Travel Management from New York University (NYU) and his Ph.D. in Hospitality Administration from University of Las Vegas Nevada (UNLV). He also earned a Recreation Services Management advanced certificate from NYU. Dr. Turnipseed joins an academic area that has shown growth and potential for future growth.
Mr. Ruffin Bell (7/1)
Athletic Director
Effective July 1, 2012, based on the recommendation of the regular department faculty Mr. Ruffin Bell was appointed to the position of Athletic Director. Mr. Bell brings a wealth of experience in the field of collegiate athletics including Sports Management Program Director at Coppin State University, Recruitment Director for Cal Ripkin Sr. Foundation and Athletic Director at Baltimore City Community College. AD Bell earned a Master of Science degree in Sports Administration from Grambling State University. His leadership skills were appreciated during the time he served as Interim Director. We look forward to his continued guidance.
Mr. Jack Drummond (7/1)
Director of Call Me Mister
Mr. Drummond comes to Cheyney from Community College of Philadelphia where he served as Administrator for the Center for Male Engagement. He is an adjunct professor at Delaware County Community College and was Associate Director at University of Pennsylvania in the Center of Excellence for Diversity in Health Education & Research. He is completing doctoral studies in Education Administration at Temple University. We look forward to his leadership in growing enrollment in the Call Me MISTER program and seeking scholarship dollars for students.
Ms. Sheilah Vance ESQ. (7/9)
Chief of Staff & Deputy to the President
Sheilah D. Vance, Esq., most recently served as President and General Counsel of the Institute for Educational Equity and Opportunity, a research, education and training organization that focuses on K-12 public school finance issues and is located in Washington, DC and Philadelphia, PA. Ms. Vance has also maintained a private law practice in Philadelphia and has served as assistant dean and faculty member at Villanova University for over a decade. Ms. Vance earned a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center and a B.A. in communications, graduating Magna Cum Laude, from Howard University. She looks forward to getting to know the CU family.
Ms. Nancy L. Jones (8/6)
Vice President of University Advancement & External Relations
Ms. Nancy Jones has served for the last four years as the Chief Fundraising Officer at Virginia State University where she has met or exceeded fund raising goals. She led the development department to complete a recent $37 million Major Gifts campaign including private and public gifts. She almost doubled the original goal of $20 million. Other positions she has served include Director of Development-Major Gifts at Dillard University where she led the university to complete a capital campaign which raised $80 million and Assistant Director of Annual Fund at Claremont School of Theology. Ms. Jones earned a B.F.A at Howard University, Master of Arts at Claremont School of Theology, M.Div at New Brunswick Theological Seminary and has completed doctoral work at Claremont Graduate University. She looks forward to meeting all members of the campus community and working with the alumni.
Dr. Donna Parker (7/18)
Dean of Faculty & Academic Schools
For the last three years, Dr. Donna Parker served as the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness at Harcum College. Prior to that, Dr. Parker served as the Associate Dean of Liberal Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Burlington County College and the Assistant Dean of Students at Rutgers University, Camden Campus. Dr. Parker earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Innovation at Wilmington University and her Masters in Social Work from Western Michigan University. She is looking forward to a collegial relationship with faculty and staff.
Dr. Eric Hilton (7/30)
Executive Director of Enrollment Management
Dr. Hilton is coming to Cheyney University from The Ohio State University, where he served as Senior Assistant Director of Admissions for Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience. Prior to that appointment, Dr. Hilton was the Director of Admissions at Northeastern Illinois University. Dr. Hilton holds a Bachelor’s degree in Interpersonal Communications, Masters in Physical Education and a Ph.D in Higher Education Administration all from the University of Ohio. He looks forward to informing the University’s admissions strategies employing quantitative analysis.
Ms. Elisabeth Burton , (7/9)
Manager of Housing Operations & Auxiliary Services
Ms. Burton has served for the last two years as the Executive Associate to the Vice President for Finance & Administration. Prior to that Ms. Burton served in both Academic Affairs and Student Affairs divisions here at Cheyney University. She also served as executive associate in Student Affairs at the University of the District of Columbia. In this new role Ms. Burton will oversee the day-to-day operations of Housing and Auxiliary Services established to support campus student-residents as part of the Office of Residence Life and Housing. Ms. Burton is a Cheyney University alum and earned her Master’s degree in Management from Wilmington University. She is eager to lend her experience and skills to enhance residential life.
Ms. Jaynette Arrington, (7/2)
Manager of Accounts Payable
Ms. Arrington comes to Cheyney from Eastern University where she held various administrative assignments with increasing responsibilities. She served as Administrative Assistant in the Office of Admissions and later as Secretary in Counseling and Academic Support. She worked as Office Manager for the Vice President of Student Development for almost 10 years and was promoted to position of Staff Accountant when she completed her Accounting degree at Pierce College in 2006. Ms. Arrington will bring her accounting and administrative skills to Cheyney as the new Manager of Accounts Payable.
