On Saturday, January 19, 2013, the Cheyney University Alumni Chapter of Delaware County held its 4th annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Scholarship Gala at the Oaks Ballroom in Glenolden, PA. More than one hundred forty (140) chapter members, Cheyney alumnus, family and friends gather to honor the 2013 Martin Luther King, Jr. Spirit Award recipient. Junious R. Stanton, president of the Cheyney University National Alumni Association was selected by the Chapter of Delaware County to receive the prestigious 2013 Martin Luther King, Jr. Spirit Award for his many contributions to Cheyney University and its alumni association and honored at this event. Junious R. Stanton, the third recipient of this award, has devoted long hours of dedicated work and he is a beautiful example of unselfish love for our university. State Representative James Roebuck received the award in 2011 and former Congressman; Joseph Sestak received this award in 2010. Junious was accompanied by his lovely wife Sonja Stanton who is a Cheyney alumna.

The annual Scholarship Gala is also an opportunity to recognize a chapter member who provided exemplary service to the Chapter of Delaware County. This year chapter members selected the Chapter of Delaware County’s Financial Secretary, Claudean Boyd Kemmer, to receive the chapter’s 2013 Appreciation Award. John Lemon ’67 presented the Chapter of Delaware County with a copy of his most recent book about Media High School athletes titled Black and Gold. The following Chapter of Delaware County’s 2012 officers were presented with an Appreciation Certificate: Rosalind Jones Johnson, President; David Adams, Vice President; Sharon Barnett, Recording Secretary; Antoinette Turner, Corresponding Secretary; Gaynelle Turner Lewis, Treasurer; Claudean Kemmer, Financial Secretary; and Richard Brown, Chaplain. These officer were reelected to these position in 2013.

Gregory Benjamin, Director of Alumni Relations and his wife Kathy Clark Benjamin were in attendance as well as CUNAA Executive Board members, Vice President, Marion Haliburton, and George Walker. Alumni and guests from various chapters and the tri state area attended this annual event.

Chapter members Gaynelle Turner Lewis, Deborah Turner, Tina Randall, Lottie Washington, Antoinette Turner, Ricky Turner, Sheree Monroe, and Rosalind Jones Johnson were recognized for their exemplary efforts to raise 2013 scholarship funds.
