The “Four Perfections” began their singing group career while attending Cheyney State College (now Cheyney University of Pennsylvania) in 1967. The group was composed of Barrington Lessene (West Philadelphia, PA), Raymond (Chip) Porter (Pittsburgh, PA), Mervin Steals (Aliquippa, PA), and Melvin Steals (Aliquippa, PA).
They recorded two songs, “I’m Not Strong Enough” and “I’ll Hold On”. The group performed in venues around the Tri-State area.
“I’m Not Strong Enough” has been played in the UK for over 40 years and has maintained it’s popularity throughout those years. Around September 2014, the “Four Perfections” were contacted by promoter, Dave Moore of Northern Soul, to perform in the New Century Soul’s 11th Anniversary Allnighter in Manchester, UK.
Well, having not sung together for 47 years, they began practicing and on November 29, 2014, performed live on stage to a sell out crowd. What a tremendous feat for four talented musicians to accomplish! Two of the group’s members, the twins, Mervin and Melvin Steals, wrote “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love”, sung by the Spinners.
Philadelphia, PA, Pittsburgh, PA, and Cheyney University should be so proud.
